Here's Why You're Not Getting Enough Sleep

It is something of an epidemic these days, and yet it is so hard to put your finger on exactly why. If you frequently find yourself failing to get a good night’s sleep, you might well want to know what you can do about it. The truth is that insomnia, whether short-term or chronic, happens for a variety of reasons, and it is always down to the individual to work out what might be going wrong. But if you want to make some quick changes which will help you to drift off tonight, then there are some things you can do. Let’s take a look at why you might not be getting enough sleep recently.

Your Bed Isn’t Comfortable Enough

You would think it was obvious that you need a comfortable bed in order to sleep well, and yet this is one of the last things that people actually think of when they are trying to improve their chances of sleep. First things first, then: take a look at your bed and try to figure out if you could improve on anything. Maybe you need to change your bedding to high-quality alternatives like Richard Haworth? Or maybe the bed frame itself is a little old and rickety, and could do with updating? Sometimes you fail to sleep because your pillowcase is old - is this true for you? It is well worth looking through all of these things to make sure that you have as comfortable a bed as possible. It really does make a huge difference.

You Use Too Many Screens

Here’s something that more people could do with knowing. The light from screens is actually likely to inhibit your ability to sleep. The light itself disrupts the production of melatonin in the body, a chemical which tells your body when it is time to sleep. So if you are guilty of using screens a lot, especially at night, you might find that you struggle to get off to sleep as soon as you would like. Try to cut back on your Twitter usage before bed, and it should make a big difference to your quality of sleep.

You’re Worried About Something

Even if you are not actually rolling around worrying about something, it might be that you are unconsciously worried, and it is affecting your sleep. You probably know deep down whether or not this is the case. If you think this might be your problem, then a long-term practical solution is likely to be the best way to deal with it - but there are quick fixes for the time-being which you can adopt as well. Consider writing in a journal just before you go to bed. This will help to clear your mind of any racing thoughts which might be bubbling away, and will ensure that you can sleep much deeper and for longer.

Not getting enough sleep is one of those things which can gradually take over and ruin your daily life. Take on board the advice here, and you should find that you are drifting off much more easily tonight.
